Research summary: 

Emma is a biostratigrapher with 27 years of experience, specialising in Cretaceous and Cenozoic calcareous nannofossils and microfossils, including foraminifera and diatoms. Her skills are extensively connected with the application of industrial biostratigraphy to the hydrocarbon industry in the North Sea area, particularly chalk fields and the overburden. Her experience includes offshore work in the North Sea on exploration and appraisal wells and biosteering in chalk reservoirs. Her biostratigraphic expertise also contributed to projects focussed on exploration offshore West Greenland, and analogue studies in North East Greenland.  

Her work ranges from single-well studies based on one microfossil discipline to field-specific projects and basin-wide, regional multiclient studies relying on the amalgamation of several fossil groups and geological and geophysical disciplines.   

Emma also applies biostratigraphy to aquifer mapping and engineering and building projects, e.g. the construction of drainage tunnels and subsurface mapping in preparation for tunnel construction. Her biostratigraphic competences are increasingly utilized in association with the recent focus on the energy transition, with emphasis on reservoir and seal mapping and characterization for CO2 storage, geothermal energy and windfarm foundation placement.
