Appointment: Technical Manager at Chronosurveys  

Research summary:  Gil Machado is a geologist with a PhD in Stratigraphy and paleozoic Paleontology and 15 years of experience in the oil and gas industry.

During his PhD he worked on the stratigraphy (palynology-based) of Devonian and Carboniferous strata, applying zonation schemes from Gondwana and surrounding regions. At PDO (Oman) he was in charge of the Paleozoic Stratigraphy in the GeoSolutions team, including the scientific guidance of the company’s PalyLab. Well litho- and biostratigraphic correlation were regular workflows in ODM/IC and StrataBugs.

Since 2019 he has been heading Chronosurveys, a consulting company focused on biostratigraphy. In that role he worked with projects from around the World, from Ediacarian to recent strata, in conjunction with other consultants, using different biostratigraphic disciplines. Chronosurveys is leading research projects in the field of digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, applied to Biostratigraphy.

His experience also includes palynofacies, TOC, RockEval, vitrinite reflectance. As part of his previous job with an operator, he dealt with all stages of exploration and development planning, from new opportunities to pre-development. Seismic interpretation and sedimentary fairways analysis using seismic attributes were some of the main work areas to generate hydrocarbon prospectivity reports and GIS projects with GDE, plays and risk maps.

He regularly delivers training courses on these topics, face-to-face and online, to multiple audiences – graduate students, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies’ staff.
