Jeremy Young

Research summary: 

Jeremy is a micropalaeontologist who has worked primarily on calcareous nannoplankton, including both living coccolithophores and calcareous nannofossils. He has published ca. 200 papers on them covering a wide
range of topics including:

  • Neogene and Quaternary calcareous nannofossil taxonomy, biostratigraphy, and palaeoceanography.
  • The ecology, taxonomy and biogeography of extant coccolithophores.
  • Phytoplankton response to global environmental change.
  • Fossil coccolith microevolution and intra-specific variation in extant coccolithophores.
  • Coccolith biomineralization and its relationship to coccolithophore taxonomy and evolution.
  • Quality of the plankton fossil record and of data syntheses from it.

Over the past decade his work has increasingly focused on production of web-database syntheses of taxonomy and taxonomy-related data. This started with development of the Nannotax database of nannoplankton taxonomy (www.mikrotax.org/Nannotax3) which is now the prime online reference for the group, as used daily by students, research scientists and industrial biostratigraphers around the globe. This work has subsequently expanded in collaboration with a range of colleagues to include other groups of microfossils – planktonic foraminifera are comprehensively covered by pforam@mikrotax (www.mikrotax.org/pforams) whilst databases on radiolaria and deep-sea benthic foraminifera are at an earlier stage of development. To complement the taxonomic coverage, occurrence databases have been incorporated into the mikrotax websites including the NEPTUNE, Triton and ForCens databases. and the CASCADE database of extant coccolithophore occurrence data.

Since 2024 Jeremy has been working with Prof James Ogg (Purdue University) on developing an open-access web-database of the stratigraphic correlation data that underpins the Geologic TimeScale, as presented in GTS2020 and via the TimeScaleCreator program.
